Respecting God’s House
On this celebration of the Dedication of St. John Lateran it seems
appropriate to speak about respect in Church. Cell phones should never be
answered inside of Church and one should always have phones on silent or
vibrate mode when in Church (even though an announcement is read it would be
nice to eventually omit the announcement because everyone is doing this
already).
Chewing gum should also never occur in Church. Talking
should be only when necessary, be kept to a minimum and should be kept at a
low volume, respecting the prayer space of others in Church. What is “when
necessary”? Communications that pertain to liturgy or simple greetings in
Church could be considered necessary. Excessive talking about the
activities of the past week or other such things should be done in the
vestibule or outside of Church.
One should dress as to honor God. This doesn’t mean we
should always be in coat and tie for men and a dress for women. However,
what we wear speaks about the person we’re visiting, the place we’re in and
the others around us. Please show respect for God, the Church and others by
dressing in such a way to honor God and the body He gave you. Let us each
do our own part to make this place of Eucharistic celebration a place of
honor and respect. |
