San Lorenzo Ruiz - the First Filipino Saint

He was born to a Chinese father and a Filipina mother. He married and fathered three children. He became a member of Cofradia del Santísimo Rosario (Confraternity of the Most Holy Rosary) and worked transcribing the documents of baptism, confirmation and marriage unions in the official books of the church.

He was falsely implicated in a crime and fled to Taiwan, with his companions including four priests. At least that is what he thought. Too late he realized that they where bound to Nagasaki, Japan. They were all caught, thrown into prison and persecuted for their faith. Two years later they were hung upside down with their head inside a well with limited air. San Lorenzo Ruiz died a martyr's death on September 29, 1637 while professing his faith.

He was proclaimed "Blessed" in February 1981 together with 16 other companion and canonized by Pope John Paul II in Rome on October 18, 1987.  His Feast Day is September 28.
