A day of great joy – four new auxiliary bishops for
Los Angeles!
Auxiliary Bishop Albert Bahhuth
Auxiliary Bishop Fr. Brian Nunes and Auxiliary Bishop Fr. Slawomir Szkredka
Auxiliary Bishop Fr. Matthew Elshoff
September 23rd was a day of celebration, hope, and happiness for Los Angeles
as four bishops were ordained by Archbishop José H. Gomez to serve the
Archdiocese. These four men are great priests that have been elevated to auxiliary
bishop positions in the largest archdiocese in our country. Each of these new bishops knows the depth and breadth of this vast, multicultural three-county area that
serves over 4.5 million Catholics.
Tania and I attended the historic ordination with more priests in attendance than we could count! Many leaders in the Archdiocese, parishioners, and family and friends of the auxiliary bishops added their support and encouragement. I attended the Vespers the night before, a solemn prayer service preparing for the ordinations.
The Cathedral staff, choir and volunteers produced seamless and on-time events. While attending these services, I recognized that the sacraments that take place inside the Cathedral are far more important than the building, yet having such a magnificent Cathedral makes me proud to be part of our Catholic community of this archdiocese.

It's That Time of the Year
Kathy Anderson
President and Executive Director
It’s about this time of year that we begin the anticipation for all the events that take us through the end of the calendar year – notably Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year`s Eve. All these events have an element of planning - bringing out the decorations, making grocery lists, making gift selections, sending cards, and organizing schedules around family and friends.
One of the holidays that we don’t seem to plan for is All Saints Day, the day that we remember our beloved saints in heaven. This year, why not make a special effort to have a family and friends meal around the celebration of the lives of those that have gone before us. It’s important for the new generations to know their forefathers and how they impact the family and our world today.
When I think of my own parents and grandparents, I remember the core values we were handed down around the importance of hard work, our character, and compassion for others. As my parents often said, these are the gifts, including a good education, that can never be taken away from you.
I cannot end this column without a tie-in to philanthropy. Why not take this opportunity to create a named fund in honor of one of the ancestral saints you know that exemplifies their life? Or perhaps make a gift in their honor to a charity that was important to them. For me, I’m going send a gift to St. Mary School in Gilroy in honor of my parents who valued the importance of a Catholic school education for their six children.
The Academy Award for Catholics!
The Evangelii Gaudiumhonor from St. John’s Seminary.
September 16th was a night to remember with 950 attending a festive occasion on the plaza of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. We celebrated the achievements of seminary graduates Fr. Rodel Balagtas, Msgr. John Moretta, and Bishop Tim Freyer, including the important work of the seminary in educating priests for ministry in the Catholic church.
For me, I gratefully excepted the Evangelii Gaudium honor. It was a time to celebrate the importance of the priests in my life from my Catholic school days to present, and to recognize that our priests and all religious men and women in our lives are there to help us get to heaven. I was happy to have so many friends, colleagues, and family members together for what I viewed as the most important honor in my life, like an academy award for Catholics!
With appreciation and thanks to Archbishop José H. Gomez, Dan Schwala, Fr. Marco Durazo and the Seminary Board for this recognition.

Honoring our Loved Ones During the Holidays!
Tania Naaman
Director of Client Services and Assistant Secretary
It’s October and my family is already starting to plan for the year-end holidays. My brother and his family are coming to LA this year, so we have much to do for Christmas and New Year’s. I’m taking Kathy’s advice and planning a meal with friends and family to honor my parents for All Saints Day on November 1st. When I think of my parents, I think of the values of integrity, generosity, and perseverance.
How are you going to honor your loved ones this year?
You can make memorial and honorarium gifts to charities in their honor, perhaps as a philanthropic option for Christmas giving.
You can create Scholarship named for a loved one and incorporate criteria that honors your loved one’s values.
You can create a Designated Fund named for your loved one and benefiting their charity of choice.
Because of your generous contributions, CCF-LA granted $402 million since 2015 and 90% of the donations supported our Church, including Catholic school education. These are grants that have changed the lives of thousands.
Imagine the life-giving you will make when you give this year.

As we start to wrap up the last months of the year with celebrations and events you bet I’m busy! Coordinating the events that we want to support, the guest lists, lots of photos, and putting people’s names with their faces – this is the inner joy that comes with my role at CCF-LA.
Through our monthly newsletter we are able to relate these memorable moments to share with you!
Being the person that keeps the team on target for article deadlines empowers me to get our stories out to you, the reader, hoping that more people and families during this season might remember something they read in our newsletter and want to help others.
In a big way, I’m a keeper of the CCF-LA culture!
Two personal thoughts that tie into this newsletter:
1.My family recently had a Celebration of Life for my father. We displayed his instruments, music, cooking items, nature photography, and his art. These were the things that he loved. My kids and I all have the same interest. This was what we were exposed to. This sort of tradition was handed down, this was what we know and still lives in our home.
2.The Peralta Family Fund’s grant will be going to Homeboy Industries where the food is good, and where art is important for people to express.

Sister Mary Sean Runs a Marathon!
As a legacy runner with the LA Marathon for 23 years, I ran 10 other marathons, notably Oakland, San Francisco, Golden Gate, Long Island and New York City. My favorite was NYC because I ran through the five boroughs; my parents were from the Brooklyn Borough.
My marathon years began in 1980, when I taught at St. Elizabeth’s School in Oakland, with the Junior High Department team. I was invited to walk in the gym after school. I was very athletic in my own elementary and high school years (all our family were athletic and great swimmers.)
I immediately loved the walking and very soon began getting up at 4:30 a.m. with Sister Denise Lazaro to run in the high school yard, then to Lake Merritt - 3 miles away. I was good friends with Sister Marion Irvine, OP, a San Rafael Dominican who was ten years older and qualified for her age bracket for the 1984 Summer Olympics.
In 1982, I signed up for the Avon Run for Women. I was in the registration line behind a woman who was running her 11th marathon. I was in AWE!! And that was the beginning of my marathon “career”. Sister Kathleen Bryant, vocation director, for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, initiated the RUN FOR VOCATIONS with the 1989 LA Marathon. We had a great team every year and our bright green shirts pointed us out in the crowd of runners. Glorious days!!!!!
Sister Mary Sean, a Dominican Sister is the Foundress, Partnership for Re-Entry Program of the Restorative Justice ministry of the ADLA. Please consider a gift to PREP’s account at CCF-LA in her honor. PREP
