Four new LA auxiliary bishops called to ‘urgent’ task at Ordination
Mike Cisneros, Pablo Kay and Tom Hoffarth | Angelus News
Four LA priests were urged to take up the “urgent” task of evangelization as they were ordained auxiliary bishops at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in a historic three-hour-long liturgy.
“Love is the true meaning of our religion. Spreading that love to the ends of the earth is the Church’s mission,” Archbishop José H. Gomez told new bishops Albert Bahhuth, Matthew Elshoff, Brian Nunes, and Slawomir Szkredka in his homily at the Tuesday afternoon Ordination Mass. “Today, my dear bishops-elect, the Lord consecrates you to lead in that mission.”
Archbishop Gomez recently celebrated the annual Mass for All Immigrants at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. The following is adapted from his homily.
Today, we celebrate the beautiful diversity of peoples that make up the family of God in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and in the Dioceses of Orange, San Bernardino, and San Diego.
And we are all here today because we share one vision and one hope. We are united in the cause of building a home for all peoples, all nations, races, and languages.
Jesus said that he was sent into this world by the Father, and that the Father sent him to unite all things in heaven on earth in him. He said the Father sent him “that all may be one” under the one God who made all of us.
Called the Maui Mercy Mission, it was initiated 10 days after the catastrophe with a letter from Bishop Larry Silva to Hawaii's deacons and priests.
"Many of those affected by the fire simply need someone to talk to, to pray with them, and to comfort them," he wrote. There is also a need to bless the bodies of the dead in the temporary morgue if families request it, he said.
41st Annual Red Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels
First Celebrated in Paris in 1245, the Red Mass is an annual tradition at the opening of the Judicial Year, in line with that of the U.S. Supreme Court each October. Judges and lawyers attend, joined by public officials and law faculty members. The Red Mass received its name from the celebrant’s red vestments, and the Lord High Justices’ robes of brilliant scarlet. In Los Angeles, this annual tradition is sponsored by The St. Thomas More Society of Los Angeles, a non-profit association of Catholic legal professionals. In our community, the Red Mass is offered in prayer for judges, lawyers, legislators, and legal professionals of all faiths and traditions.
The Mass is followed by a hosted reception with members of the clergy, bench and bar. We hope you will be able to attend our 41st celebration this coming October 25th at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles. We request that guests who are interested in attending please R.S.V.P. to help us prepare an appropriate amount of food and beverages for the reception.

Eucharistic Revival Prayer Most Reverend Jose H. Gomez, Archbishop of Los Angeles
Heavenly Father, we thank you for the gift of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who promised to stay with us always, until the end of the age.
Reawaken our wonder at His presence in the Most Holy Eucharist. May our hearts burn within us as He opens the Scriptures and breaks the bread.
Give us the eyes of faith to recognize His presence in our brothers and sisters, especially in the face of the poor and the suffering.
Nourished by the Eucharist, send us forth to walk faithfully as missionary disciples, proclaiming the Gospel to every heart and extending Your kingdom to every land.
