SB 1414 would make it a felony to buy a child for sex in California. Did you know that purchasing a 14 to 17-year-old child for sex in California is currently a misdemeanor, punishable by as little as 2 days in jail? While selling a child for sex is a felony, the demand for sexual exploitation comes from sex buyers, destroying the lives of victims.
Unfortunately, the Senate Public Safety Committee watered down this bill to protect only 14 and 15-year-olds. We encourage passing this bill and restoring protections for all minors to the bill, including felony charges and sex offender registration.
An estimated 100,000 minors are commercially sexually exploited in the United States, and California has one of the highest rates of human trafficking in the nation. Tragically, most trafficked young people come from the foster care system. Many have experienced abuse, poverty, homelessness, substance addiction, juvenile detention and are undocumented or runaways.
Young people deserve to be protected from this violence.
